Why paraffin candles are bad

You may of noticed that our candles are 100% natural and that we choose to use soy wax over a paraffin based wax. Although the latter is the cheapest option, it is also harmful and in this article, we look at the negative side of paraffin candles.

Why paraffin candles are bad?

Paraffin is a by-product from petroleum. When you burn a paraffin based candle you are releasing carcinogenic toxins into the air. These toxins are known as benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein. Even soot is released which can discolour your walls and furniture. By lighting a paraffin based candle, you are effectively starting a diesel engine in your room.

Many scented paraffin candles also do not include natural scents/ fragrances. These also increase harmful pollution within your home.

The health implications of paraffin based candles is the main reason we opted to produce natural candles. We use a soy based wax and natural scents. If you suffer from a respiratory illness, our candles are safe.

Another negative regarding paraffin based candles is that they often do not burn evenly or as long a soy based candles. Soy wax burns more slowly and generally you get around 30% extra burn time. The feature picture is of a paraffin candle that we brought and tested while researching the set up of SoyAndle. You can see there is still a lot of wax left with no wick. This is despite following the rule of burning candles for a set period of time. See this article.

We can appreciate that natural candles are generally more expensive but spending the extra is worth it in the long run. We have priced our candles to be as competitive as possible to help make them more affordable. Click here to view our range of natural candles.
